13. Jill Marie Landis: Historical/Inspirational Romance!
Welcome to Holiday Bash 2010! Contestant #13:
Jill Marie Landis
BIO:
Jill Marie Landis is the author of 25 bestselling novels. Her books have been on the USA Today and New York Times lists. The winner of two Romance Writers of America Rita Awards, Jill Marie lives in Hawaii with her husband. She enjoys sunning, writing on the beach, raising orchids and dancing hula.
Preliminary Questions:
Eggnog or Mimosas? Are you old enough to drink?
Eggnog. When that runs out, Mimosas.
Old enough to drink and old enough to know better but that never stopped me.
We’re also taking pictures with Santa, did you bring a gift for him? (Maybe a new release or a pretty book cover…)
2 autographed copies of HEART OF STONE.
Blurb:
Raised in a tribe of street urchins, Maddie Grande was taught to be a thief and beggar on the streets of New Orleans. She and her twin “brothers” have recently left New Orleans and moved to the bayou. The twins are rarely there, but Maddie has come to love the swamp and longs to change her life but she knows that her brothers will never give up their lawless ways. When the twins kidnap the daughter of a wealthy carpetbagger, they force Maddie to hide the precocious eight-year-old while they return to New Orleans to wait for notice of a reward.
Pinkerton agent Tom Abbott is assigned to the kidnapping case in which Maddie has become an accomplice. In a chase that takes them to Baton Rouge, a mutual attraction becomes evident, but Tom is a man of honor and Maddie is a thief and a liar.
Will Maddie and Tom listen to their hearts or choose honor over love?
OOOooooo, it looks awesome! Why don’t you come in and we’ll talk! First off…let’s play a game!
You’re standing in front of a Christmas tree, dressed as Santa’s helper. Your publisher asks what you are doing holding a copy of your book with a big smile. What do you tell him/her?
That I’m doing shameless self promotion as usual! I’ve danced the hula in a Borders Store to drum up business.
We don’t think you’re shameless! We’d love to see you hula!
Okay another: You’re in a Holiday writing contest. You have to plot a book in 30 minutes. You’re given a sleigh, a reindeer and a Santa hat. What do you come up with? How do you go about this?
Yikes! I grab a huge piece of art paper and start drawing circles and write the names of each character in a circle. Then I brainstorm and connect the dots:
The reindeer is dead. The sleigh appears to have run into something, half if it is crushed. Santa’s hat has a spot of blood on it. He is nowhere to be found.
Obviously, this is heading into the contemporary romantic suspense arena. The detective on the scene is lovely Sheila Reynolds. She’s a rookie, trying to act confident. She’s a knock out. Blonde and shapely. She has to overcome the handicap of being beautiful. No one ever takes her seriously. It’s the blonde thing, you know.
A crime scene vet is called (Is there such a thing?Must check sources.)He’s to do forensics on the reindeer. His name is Brick Dirk and he’s tall, dark and devastatingly handsome—but he’s got a thing against good looking blondes. Stems back from the time his stepmother locked him in a pantry for two days and he tried to eat all the canned food stored there and ended up sick.
But something draws him to Sheila. Something he tries to resist but it’s impossible.
Sheila’s boss, the chief of police arrives. The tension in the air is palpable.
And that’s how it goes. Stop me now.
Nooooo! More! LOL. So, are you a plotter or pantser? What is your routine?
I’m a plotter. I do character studies, usually end up with a 32 page synopsis but it’s just a road map to get me going. As I write I become a day to day pantser. I stop to research along the way. You can find a lot of plot in research details.
What advice would you give aspiring authors?
Get to the end then rewrite at least 4 times.. Even when you think you’re done, you’re not.
How did you start your career? Who was your first publisher?
On my second attempted novel I entered the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Contest for unpublished writers. I won the Historical Romance division that year and the book was bought by one of the judges who was an editor at Berkley Jove (Putnam now Penguin). The rest is history.
What are you working on right now?
HEART OF GLASS Book 3 of the Irish Angels series. It’s set in on a ruined plantation along River Road in New Orleans ten years after the War Between the States. A Beauty and the Beast theme. The heroine is an architect (self taught and in a man’s field for the times) who goes to restore the old home where she spent much of her childhood. The hero is the owner; he’s shut himself away in the garconniere and refuses her help. She feels it’s her duty to save him. She owes it to his family (his sister was heroine’s best friend.) I think of the 3 books in the series, this is my favorite. Although whatever I’m working on at the time is my favorite, usually.
What news would you like to share with your readers?
Life news? I dance the hula and recently my hula sisters and I danced at elder care homes on the island where I live. My husband and I will be in California with my family for Christmas.
Book news? I love what I do (most days) and know how blessed I am to get to be a working writer. I have a new series I’m working on that is so much fun. Can’t wait to leak the news in 2011.

Irish angels series? *makes note to go look up*. How cool that you hula! You sound like quite the fun-loving gal. Plus your advice on rewriting even when you think you are done is priceless.
December 25th, 2010 at 3:11 pm
That was the hardest thing to do…learn to sit tight and rewrite. I wanted to be FINISHED. It doesn’t work that way. You really don’t know the beginning of a book or the characters until you get to the end with them. Then you go back and fix.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:44 am
this sounds awesome and adding to the list
December 24th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! Hope to answer questions you might have or to just say Hi again a little later. Now…over to Mom’s house to set the table for tomorrow! Aloha, Jill

Great Interview! And I love the sounds of the book!
~~*Drea*~~
December 24th, 2010 at 2:33 pm
I loved the interview! The writing process is just a mystery to me. I hear how others go about it but I still don’t think I could do it!
December 24th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
I’ve been reading your books forever and wonder what you think has led to your longevity? And do you ever see yourself running out of ideas?
Happy Holidays!
December 25th, 2010 at 2:56 pm
This answer is for Joder…what has led to my longevity…good health! And as far as writing goes, as my friend Linda Lael Miller says, “Just keep showing up!” Be flexible. Follow the market but don’t do anything you don’t want to do.
Aloha, J.
December 25th, 2010 at 2:57 pm
Forgot to answer the part about running out of ideas…well…I hope I don’t run out of ideas. Sometimes it’s hard to come up with the middle day to day scenes, but the ideas for the plots and characters just keep coming…so far.
December 24th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Have read several of your books and loved them!
Merry Christmas!

Great interview!
December 24th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Enjoyed the interview and the blurb really has me wanting to read this story. Happy Holidays.
December 24th, 2010 at 7:48 pm
Sounds like a great book! Definately adding it to my TBR list!
December 24th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
I’m wondering how you decided to write inspirational stories– if it was a decision from the beginning, or if it just happened as your stories evolved.
Congratulations on your success!
December 25th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
A little bit of both. I had written about 20 novels, most of them Western Romances, and the market was narrowing. I was very tired of writing love scenes so erotic was out (okay, sorry all of you who love to read them…) and didn’t want to write about vampires…love to watch movies about vamps but don’t read or write them…and then there are the sexy Regecy historicals..like to read them but didn’t want to write them…and I was really wanting to have more of a message in the books I am writing. So inspirationals have been a wonderful rewarding fit.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:44 pm
Wow, Heart of Lies sounds like a great read Jill! I’ve added it to my TBB list.
Question for you; What was the last book you read (e or print) and did you like it?
Happy Holidays!
December 25th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
Hi Kim,
The last book I read was The Lost Child, a suspense. I can’t remember the author but it’s a male author. My husband is reading it right now. It’s very good. I couldn’t put it down or get anything done while I was reading it. It’s about a young boy, a twin, whose sister disappeared a year before the story starts. Then his father left his mother. Mom is strung out on drugs. The kid is doing a house to house search of the town, zeroing in on homes of known child molesters. There are so many plot twist I was in awe.
December 25th, 2010 at 4:44 am
I love this interview! I will have to check out these books. I love finding new authors to read.
Happy Holidays!
December 25th, 2010 at 9:27 am
Merry Christmas! I thought I would stop back in and say hello!
December 25th, 2010 at 11:50 am
Oh! Irish angels! Sounds like a book right up my alley! I can’t wait to find it and start reading!!
Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas!
December 25th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
Wow, thanks for all the great questions and for joining the party. I’m glad you’re enjoying the interview. Gotta go. An elf just ran by with scotch tape stuck on his shoe and a lampshade on his head. Where is that punchbowl?
December 25th, 2010 at 5:17 pm
How creative that you did the hula! That would have got me to buy a book! Have you ever been in a store and found someone looking through your books? If so, did you approach them?
December 30th, 2010 at 11:23 am
Ha! I have to be careful when I’m in a store and see someone debating in the book aisle. If I’m in my usual attire…flip flops and shorts, etc…and I say, “Hi! I’m the author!” Then I get some really funny looks. People think I’m some nut who has just walked up to them! I have spoken to buyers in stores, for sure, and introduced myself and I like to find out what people are reading and why.
December 25th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
Wonderful interview- I can’t wait to read the books coming out next year- happy holidays

I enjoy historicals. They take me to a time and place I cannot go.
December 30th, 2010 at 11:23 am
Me, too!
December 25th, 2010 at 10:01 pm
Thanks so much Jill for answering my question and letting me know what you’ve been reading! It sounds like the other book here, another good read!
I’ve tried to find it but can’t.
If you wouldn’t mind, could you let me know who the author is? You’ve gotten me very intrigued now!!
December 26th, 2010 at 11:26 am
Just found the book on hubby’s desk. The author is John Hart. It’s really great.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:45 am
Wow! your story about the crime scene sounds awesome! You should write it so that we all know what happens. The part about the hero being locked in the pantry for 2 days makes me think that this story has been on your mind before you were asked the question.
I think that it’s cool that you dance the hula and used to it drum up business. I would like to see you dance the hula.
Merry Christmas!

December 26th, 2010 at 11:28 am
Probably just hungry, usually am. That’s why the pantry. Re: the hula. Hula is life. I love to dance…not that great at it but it’s a joy.
December 26th, 2010 at 11:28 am
Irish Angels–surely the most charming angels of all. A little Blarney never hurts!
December 26th, 2010 at 10:43 pm
A lot of Blarney!
December 26th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
Do you ever get writers block? If you do how do you defeat it?
December 26th, 2010 at 10:45 pm
I’ve never had serious writers’ block. There are some days I just don’t feel like writing so it’s better to read or go outside or do something else and snap out of it. If it goes on too long, try moving to a new workplace…get outside or go to a library or just change rooms…try writing on you lap in a cozy chair, whatever. Change the scene. Also change the characters’ points of view. Or do a bit of research. Don’t be overwhelmed by the big picture. Tell yourself it’s okay to write one page…and that will probably lead to a whole lot more. J.
December 26th, 2010 at 5:19 pm
Shameless self promotion is a good thing! I think it would be fun to see you do a hula at the book store. I love your idea from the Holiday prompt to be done in 30 minutes. It actually sounds like it would make a good story.
What’s been your favorite story or character to write so far?
December 26th, 2010 at 10:48 pm
Can’t choose a favorite character. I usually like the book I’m working on at the moment best of all. I am working on a series of stories set on Kauai that involve a group of crazy women who dance the hula and solve a mystery. They are hilarious.
December 27th, 2010 at 9:49 pm
Good answer. It’s hard for me to choose a favorite character when people ask and I’m not even a writer. I tend to like the characters of whatever book I’m reading at the time, though I do have a soft spot for Jane Austen’s characters.
December 26th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
So did you get what you wanted for Chrismtas?
Any surprises?
December 26th, 2010 at 10:49 pm
What I wanted most was a peaceful Christmas and I pretty much got exactly that. It was one of the best in years. No surprises. Hubby and I decided not to exchange big gifts this year. Used the money for the youngsters of the extended family and those who really needed things. We were content to watch the fire on Christmas eve and toast each other and our blessings.
December 27th, 2010 at 7:26 am
You dance hula, eh? My youngest daughter (12) wants to learn hula and belly dancing.
December 28th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
There may be a hula halau (class) somewhere near you. Google it for your area. It’s such a joy! You should take lessons, too!
December 27th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
Aloha, Jill!
December 27th, 2010 at 11:49 pm
Aww, Thanks for responding back with the name of the author Jill! That would have driven me wacko!
Now I can head off and check it out!
Happy New Year!
December 28th, 2010 at 11:47 pm
I really enjoyed this enterview. It is a joy to get to know another writer better.
December 31st, 2010 at 10:09 am

Happy New Year all of the best for 2011!
December 30th, 2010 at 11:25 am
Happy New Year to all! I’m off for a New Year’s Eve stay not far away. We are going to stay in a Hyatt Regency and see a friend perform Shakespeare!
