Knight’s Curse: A New Twist on Urban Fantasy

It’s Blog Wednesday and guess who we have here? Karen Duvall! Yay!

Knight’s Curse: A New Twist on Urban Fantasy

I’m very excited to be guest blogging today at Romance Hotspot! J My urban fantasy novel, KNIGHT’S CURSE, is a brand new release from Harlequin Luna so I’d like to share some background of the story with you.

I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing paranormal stories and felt it was time to try something new and different. Vampires and werewolves and fae are great, but there’s so many other mystical and magical worlds to invent. When I began thinking about a new story, I focused on who my main character would be. In my mind she had to be strong yet vulnerable, and unique with unusual powers. So I made her half angel with superhuman senses and named her Chalice.

I took history into account as I considered modern knighthood for Chalice’s background. Female knights weren’t common during the dark ages, so I have her descended from an order of female knights who fought in the Crusades. I gave them a mission to fight supernatural evil, and had them mate with their guardian angels to create offspring that would be born with magical abilities.

In traditional mythology, half-angels are evil beings called Nephilim, but the Hatchet Knights in my series are just the opposite. In KNIGHT’S CURSE, Chalice starts out thinking of herself as a freak of nature. As an orphan, she has no clue what her background is or if she has any family left. She’s kidnapped and bonded to a gargoyle as a way to force her into a life of thievery for a nefarious group of greedy sorcerers.

Chalice has lived a sheltered life so when she discovers who she really is, it takes her time to accept and learn how to deal with the magical and dangerous life she’s thrust into. She makes friends and enemies, meets her fallen angel father for the first time, and falls in love with an immortal warrior named Aydin, who suffers with the same gargoyle curse.

KNIGHT’S CURSE starts Chalice on her journey, and the next book, DARKEST KIGHT, sheds light on the mysterious Hatchet Knights and introduces new dangers to the order. Many familiar characters return, Chalice’s warrior protector among them, but she also makes new friends and foes, and finds her real family at last. Her love for Aydin was a spark in the first book, but the second book heats up their relationship and presents new challenges for them to overcome. Look for DARKEST KNIGHT in the spring of 2012 as Chalice’s adventure continues.

You can read excerpts of KNIGHT’S CURSE in the Gallery section of my website. You’ll find them here: http://www.wix.com/jkduvall/knights-curse#!__gallery

Thank you for stopping by!

Karen Duvall

Blurb: A skilled knife fighter since the age of nine, Chalice knows what it’s like to live life on the edge–precariously balanced between the dark and the light. But the time has come to choose. The evil sorcerer who kidnapped her over a decade ago requires her superhuman senses to steal a precious magical artifact… or suffer the consequences.

Desperate to break the curse that enslaves her, Chalice agrees. But it is only with the help of Aydin–her noble warrior-protector–that she will risk venturing beyond the veil to discover the origins of her power. Only for him will she dare to fully embrace her awesome talents. For a deadly duel is at hand, and Chalice alone will have to decide between freedom… and the love of her life.

Have you met Rachel Leigh?

Today, our guest of honor is Rachel Leigh. It’s so nice to have you here, and I’m sure you’re ready for a good time! Let the party begin!

First Questions:

Wine or beer? (If you want a club soda, I’ll have to send you to the corner.)

Wine every time!

Cake or chips? Are you a sugar or salt person?

Chips (especially with wine!)

Are you old enough to drink? LOL.

I wish I could say no, but SO past that line, lol.

What did you bring us?

Blurb:

Kelly Hampton loved once…and lost. After two years of looking for Sean McKenzie in other men–and failing miserably–she takes a vow of celibacy. No sex until she finds love. Then Sean strolls back into her bar, reigniting old flames. No one has come close to understanding or satisfying her like he did. Her body burns for the passion they once shared, but her heart still remembers the pain.

Sean escaped Jessop Hill and his father’s fists in the middle of the night without a word–even to his love, Kelly–to protect his battered mother, but he never forgot the explosively erotic relationship he left behind. Now his father is dead and Sean is back for the only woman he’s ever wanted. Their reunion is full of fire – but can sexual attraction and noble intentions overcome years of heartache or will Kelly walk away to protect her heart this time.

And what makes your character and story so special?

The theme of “Coming Back” is learning to trust again and I think it is one that everyone, male or female, can relate to. Everyone’s trust is broken somewhere along the line, whether by a lover, a parent, a sibling or a friend. I love Kelly and Sean’s story because it explores those fearful emotions of letting someone back in, of letting them see the vulnerable, still healing part of your heart – and worse, being unable to stop the sexual yearning toward one individual no matter how hard you try to resist it.

All right, I guess you can come in. Now off to the roast….

Where do you dream of traveling to and why?

I would love to travel to Italy and go to as many parts as possible, Rome, Venice, Florence, Lake Garda…Every time I see pictures or hear about these places, I feel a pull deep inside but I have yet to go. I love Italian food, wine…men. Yep, I need to get me some holiday brochures, lol!

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Coming up with the plots! I am great at coming up with ideas, I have notebooks full of them but then I have to think really hard about the conflict to sustain the book as well as getting across the message to the reader.

There are so many good plotting books out there but even now I still struggle to come up with goal, motivation and conflict. Writing is a craft to be learned, that’s why I love it so much.

What are you passionate about?

My writing…and fidelity! They are the two subjects that get me on my soap box no matter who I’m with or where I am. God help anyone who says writing isn’t ‘real work’ or ‘being faithful to someone for x number of years is impossible’ once I’ve had a glass or two of wine. Take cover! ; )

Do you like more Alpha or Beta heroes?

Beta for me every time – I like getting inside that quiet, masculine type and peeling back the layers to see what makes him tick. What is it that makes him lose his temper or stand back and let someone else take the lead?

I think mystery is so much more sexy around a man than one who is upfront and banging his damn chest all the time. The alpha male just does not do it for me at all.

How much do you write in a day? Day or Night? Everyday?

I write every day without fail – seven days a week. Even on holiday! It doesn’t have to be a huge amount, maybe even an outline of a plot, a blog post but I do write every day when away (much to my husband’s annoyance!).

Having said that, on a day when the kids are at school and I have no other jobs to get done or sorted out, I am not happy if I don’t write at least 3,000 words. Day or night? Day!

The clock strikes 7pm and this Cinderella is done, lol!

Do you have any suggestions for beginning writers?

The best way to start and actually finish a story is to give yourself permission to write a rubbish first draft. This was the best piece of advice I have ever been given. Just write it from beginning to end without stopping. Once you type ‘The End’ go back and start playing…it’s SO much easier to polish words once they are on the page. Go for it!

Where can our partygoers find you and your work?

Having fun with Self-Publishing!

Having Fun With Self-Publishing!

With Debra Holland!

Ever since I first self-published my sweet (meaning not sexy) Western Romances as ebooks, I’ve been having a great time. I wish I had known through all the years of rejections that a new form of publishing was around the corner that would change everything. If I’d known, I would have written more so I’d have more books to self-publish now. Since I’m psychic, I can only share some of my experience so others will have more information about whether they want to join me on the self-publishing journey.

First of all, let me say self-publishing is not:

  1. A journey to immediate wealth.
  2. A way to skip the learning stage of writing and go directly to publication.
  3. Something that has to be all consuming when it comes to promotion.

That doesn’t mean you won’t make money in the long run with self-publishing. Self-publishing means your book can stay available for as long as you want, beyond your lifetime even. Therefore think about sales accumulating over time rather than you needing big sales figures in the beginning months.

It also doesn’t mean you can’t self-publish a poorly-crafted book. You can. However, you’ll soon receive nasty reviews, and few, if any people, will buy your book. So, you might as well do the work to get it right.

You can do as little or as much promotion as you want. I tend to do little because I’m busy and tech challenged, but I know authors who do far more.  Part of this brave new world is learning what works and what doesn’t. The best promotion is to write a good book, then write another one, and another…

My experience has been fantastic and more successful that I dreamed–over 15,000 sales in a little less than four months. Before I write more, I must state that everyone’s journey is different, therefore it’s important not to compare your sales so someone else’s (unless you’re using that comparison as a learning tool). Not everyone experiences success from the get-go as I have. Others build to success over time, especially if they have more books out.

One thing self-publishing does is give authors a place to publish their backlist. If you have the rights to your backlist, I urge you to self-publish your books. Think of it as passive income. You’ve already done the work, although you will have to edit, update, format, and design (or have designed) a new cover.

Self-publishing also gives authors and aspiring authors a place to sell their book (or books) that didn’t fit the market. For example, Wild Montana Sky won the Golden Heart award in 2001. I had two agents try to sell it. But it was sweet and Western, so didn’t sell to New York. Guess why the books are selling now–because they are sweet and Westerns, two underserved niches.

Sidenote: A friend just emailed me that Wild Montana Sky is #40 on the Amazon Movers and Shakers list. I didn’t know this list existed. I had to stop writing the blog and get up and move and shake a bit. J

Okay, back to the blog.

Self-publishing also gives you additional income. Maybe it will be small–enough for a nice dinner out once a month, or maybe it will be enough (like it is for one friend) to not have to work the day job. Although I do have to warn you, checking your sales figures on Amazon is addicting!

I receive fan email now. The first ones brought tears to my eyes. I feel a little like Sally Field winning the Oscar, not “You like me,” but “You like my books! You really, really like my books!” Wow. What a great feeling.

My creative muse, beaten down from the discouragement of years of rejections, has revived. I have a renewed sense of creativity and desire to write. There’s also a wonderful sense that I can do it “my way.” I’ve caught myself a few times while writing saying to myself, “I can’t do that.” For example, “I can’t put too much description here.” Then I remind myself that I no longer have to write to please a hypothetical New York editor. I can write to please myself. That doesn’t mean I’m abandoning craft and good writing standards, just that I’ve realized that a New York editor might not know my niche readership in the way I’m coming to know them.

One of the joys of self-publishing has been celebrating my friends’ success. Some of them published before me, and thus, led the way. Others published after me. As I’ve read these  books that couldn’t sell, I’ve been amazed at how wonderful they are. There’s a whole library of well-written stories that would have languished unseen if it weren’t for self-publishing. Every time I read a friend’s self-published book, I can rejoice at her accomplishment. I have a stack (okay it’s not a stack if they’re on my Kindle) of self-published books waiting to be read. I can’t wait!

Meet J. Paulette Forshey!

Today, our guest of honor is J. Paulette Forshey. It’s so nice to have you here, and I’m sure you’re ready for a good time! Let the party begin!

First Questions:

Wine or beer? (If you want a club soda, I’ll have to send you to the corner.)

I have my Vampire wine moments but I’m a beer woman at heart and if you’re going to do it right drink Guinness, it’s not only a drink it’s thick enough to be a meal too. Most beverages don’t give you that added bonus.

Cake or chips? Are you a sugar or salt person?

Oh, my doctor is not going to like this answer, ha! Chips! Sour Cream and Onion wonderfully salty chips. You can never eat just one that’s why I buy the small bags.

Are you old enough to drink? LOL.

I’m old enough that my children are old enough to drink, but not my grandchildren. So I’m old but not old as dirt, yet.

So, what did you bring us?

Blurb: Millionaire Ian Cathmor decides the best way to help his cousin with her fledgling bed and breakfast is to sponsor a contest through his company, giving the winner an all expense paid trip to her Irish retreat. He is immediately drawn to the beautiful winner, Jacquelyn Tracer, as soon as she arrives. But Jacquelyn has no idea the handsome “local farmer” is actually the head of the company who employs her, and Ian decides to allow her misconception to go uncorrected for at least a little while. It has been too long since a woman has shown an interest in him as a man instead of a wealthy CEO.

Jacquelyn Tracer is hoping this once in a lifetime trip will help to heal the wounds of a broken engagement and the cheating fiancé who destroyed her heart. She’s not expecting the powerful attraction she feels for one of the locals, especially given the fact he’s probably a player and Heaven knows, she’s had her fill of those. But passion overcomes her resolve, and she finds herself falling hard for the Irish rogue with the gentle touch…until she learns the truth and his lies threaten to destroy everything they have.

  1. And what makes your character and story so special?

I love Ian and Jacquelyn, two wounded people from different cultures who find the world is the same all over and despite their past can still find trust and love. Jacquelyn is so brave getting on plane to travel to a far away country and Ian discovers you can go home again.

All right, I guess you can come in. Now off to the roast….

Why did you want to become an author?

I have all these characters and stories in my head wanting to burst out and meet the world. I wanted to help them find a place in my world.

What would your characters say about you?

That I was fun to hang out with, can keep a secret, have good shoulders to cry on, and I make a fantastic Scalloped Oysters dish, from my late momma’s recipe.

Ohhh, scalloped oysters? That sounds so good. What do you like doing besides writing and reading? Is it dangerous?

I’d say it’s very dangerous, maybe even more so than being a lion tamer, have you tried wrangling 5 children at my age lately? Just kidding, but a 15 month old can move fast. I love being with my five grandchildren ages 10 yrs. to 1 yr. Their smiles, laughter, and outlook on life remind me why life is good no matter what.

Okay, I give you the danger part. lol. Where do you dream of traveling to and why?

I love to travel and have been to the Caribbean several times and hope to someday go to places like Ireland and Australia. The Caribbean with its laid back atmosphere really gets my creative juices flowing, and the rum doesn’t hurt either! Ireland, oh, my with all that green and legends sounds perfect for writing and finding brooding hunks. Australia, I’d love to experience everything from glitzy Sidney to the wild outback and the men who live in both.

You need to bring me along! What was your first sale as an author? Anything special about it?

The Tarczal Alliance was my first and it’s the start of hopefully a series. It begins the story of my Tarczal blood drinkers (my new breed of biter) their lives and loves. The special part would have to be it was the end and beginning of years of honing my craft and seeing my dream of being published come true.

What is one thing about you that most people don’t know?

I’m shy, painfully shy. I’d rather sit at home and write, and hang out in my own worlds with people who know me, quirks and bad habits galore, accepting me for who I am. That doesn’t mean I can’t step up to the plate when needed, but that self-confident person chairing a meeting or doing a live interview isn’t me. Digging up the courage to do things in public has me asking myself, what would the late actress Myrna Loy do. Then I suck up the fear, put my game face on and step out on the stage.

What else are you working on right now?

I’m so excited to be working on a holiday story about a disillusioned angel and a terminally ill woman. Oh, the look on your face Clarissa is priceless. Honest it’s not that depressing, it has lots of laughter and sex in it and a happy ending. The working title is ’33 days until Christmas’, and it will be out this Christmas from Whispers.

Of course I’m deep into the next Tarczal book, ‘The Archway’, with a hunk of a Tarczal named Tarek Cynewuld, the Pale Wolf. He’s a 1345 mercenary who has to deal with a modern day woman, Julianne Cater thrown back in time that makes off with the prize Tarek was eager to claim. Sex, blood, and magic what more can you ask for?

(I have a picture of what I think Tarek looks like on my web pages under Tarczals.)

Shhhh! LOL. Where can our partygoers find you and your work?

You can find me at www.jpauletteforshey.com  and some wacky things about me and my life.

Whispers Publishing, www.whispershome.com is my wonderful supportive publisher.

Thank you so much for coming!

Which Goddess are you?

Hello! I am so happy to be back at Romance Author Hotspot. Even more interesting are some of the goddesses that are featured in the Shadow warrior series.

Complex, multifaceted, women come in all shapes and sizes, colors, creeds and temperaments. Overall, women are amazing and so are the Goddesses in Aztec folklore.

There is an Aztec Goddess in all of us.

Today I am asking the question:

Which goddess are you? Leave a comment and be entered into the OUT OF THE SHADOWS blog tour contest. One lucky winner randomly chosen at the end of the tour will receive a $25.oo Amazon Gift Certificate.  See www.gabriellahewitt.com for official rules.

Chica

Aztec Name: Chalchiuhtlicue

Alias: Woman of the Jade Skirt / Lady Precious Green Stone Skirt

Appearance:  She is depicted with water-lilies, dressed in watery blues and greens, and sometimes has quetzal-feathers in her hair.

Relation to God: She is the elder sister to Tlaloc, the rain god.

Powers: Goddess of running water, springs, rivers and lakes, she is a fluid woman and can move with the flow. She has a green thumb and brings fertility to crops. She is kind and noble and loves humanity and pregnant women.

She can get a bit emotional and is prone to tears that cause floods and drought.

XOXO

Aztec Name: Xochiquetzal

Alias: Beautiful like a flower

Appearance:  She had a retinue of birds and general lovey-doveyness that followed her around like a sweet scent.

Relation to Gods: She is the twin sister of Xochipilli, the male god of sexuality. She was kidnapped by the underworld demon god, Xolotl and forced into marriage but later freed.

Powers: Goddess of love, flowers, dancing, games, and sex. A true romantic at heart, she adores men and chocolate, but don’t be fooled she is a fierce advocate of feminine power and women’s rights. She can be fickle with her lovers and is known for a voracious sexual appetite.

She is powerful and rules over her domain.  When she is upset, she rains down fire and lets her anger be known by sending tzitzimime (celestial demons) loose to punish those who disobey her.

Toci

Aztec Name: Toci/ Tlazolteotl

Alias: Heart of the Earth/ Grandmother/ Woman of Discord

Appearance:  An older woman, mature and lush of body. She is depicted with black markings around her mouth and nose, wearing a headdress of cotton spools.

Relation to Gods: She is the mother of the Gods.

Powers: Goddess of healing and curer of ailments, she is nurturing soul. She is a mothering type that loves children, doctors, nurses and midwives.  She detests filth and disease. She believes in purity, morality and cleanliness. She scorns infidelity and promiscuity. When she is upset she shakes the earth and curses people with STD’s but she is the forgiving kind and quickly makes amends to put everything back in balance.

As for me, I’m probably closer to Chica in temperament, though I don’t cause floods. At times, I am like Toci. I am a clean freak. But like XOXO, I do have a weakness for men and chocolate. Yum! On the other hand, talk to my husband and kids and they’d probably say I’m a chip off the Itza block. Don’t mess with me! LOL!

So, which Goddess are you?

Interview with Misa Buckley!

Today, our guest of honor is Misa Buckley. It’s so nice to have you here, and I’m sure you’re ready for a good time! Let the party begin!

 First Questions:

Wine or beer? (If you want a club soda, I’ll have to send you to the corner.)

Beer, specifically Newcastle Brown, please.

Cake or chips? Are you a sugar or salt person?

Caaaaaaake. Definitely a sugar person, LOL.

Are you old enough to drink? LOL.

Just about, yeah…

Hmmm..you don’t sound so sure. Should I let you in? What did you bring us today?

Blurb: The Earth is dying, and Lucian Hoyt is going to die with it thanks to his parents cancelling his pass aboard the last shuttle off the planet. There is hope, though – a brilliant inventor has come up with a plan to build a ship to evacuate those who’ve been left behind.

That inventor turns out to be Genevieve Scott, Lucian’s bitter ex-fiancée. If they’re going to work together to get off this planet, they need to put their past aside, but even melting the ice between them can’t erase all the scars.

What makes your character and story so special?

IRONHAVEN is about two characters – Lucian Hoyt and Gen Scott. Lucian is a man born into a rich family whose life is turned upside down when his parents cut him off… and abandon him on a dying Earth. Gen is his ex-fiancée, and an inventor who’s determined that it won’t be just the rich and influential that escapes.

The story is about how they overcome the lies that originally separated them and find a way to save the rest of the population.

All right, I guess you can come in since your cover is so pretty… Now off to the roast….

So, what do you write? And why?

Romance, because I’m a softie at heart. I like spec fic romance – sci fi, paranormal and steampunk. Other worlds intrigue me.

Why did you want to become an author?

I’ve always made up stories, but they used to stay in my head as people told me that writing wasn’t a “real job”. Yet, I never stopped dreaming and when I did my first National Novel Writing Month (back in 2007) I knew that writing was what I’d been born to do.

Do you have a favorite of your own books and why?

Though IRONHAVEN will always have a special place in my heart for being my first finished WIP and acceptance, I have a novella in edits called Archangel that is my baby. I’m utterly in love with the MC. He’s a real antihero, but his heart is in the right place.

What are you passionate about?

Cliff Simon *snerk* Seriously, I’m a complete sci fi geek. Give me stars and spaceships, and I’m happy for hours. Currently, I’m rewatching Stargate Atlantis, as well as catching up on Sanctuary and Warehouse 13.

Who is your favorite author and why?

Gah, don’t make me choose one! I love Lauren Gallagher for her erotic romance, Gini Kock for cracky alien romance and Kevin Hearne for snarky urban fantasy.

What else are you working on right now?

I’m writing an erotic steampunk romance called HERE BE SKY KRAKENS and a web-serialised sci fi romance called PARADIGM SHIFT

Where can our partygoers find you and your work?

On my website (misabuckley.com) and Twitter (@misabuckley)

Thanks so much for hanging out here today!

Betas Need Love Too!

Welcome Ambrielle Kirk with her new release Hard Drive!

The romantic hero in Hard Drive was my first attempt at creating a leading beta hero. Most of my romances feature alpha males who are tough, opinionated, and sometimes complicated individuals. And not to mention, alphas are masters at seducing women J Well, at least mine are.

In evaluating the beta male, I found that not all their traits were undesirable. In fact, I wouldn’t mind a male who weighed all risks carefully before diving into a life altering decision. I’m also a bit of a “people watcher”. My research for Hard Drive involved observing some beta males (some known and others unknown) while they were working, shopping, or engaged in conversation with others. For the story, I imagined a beta male who was submissive, avoids conflict, and hesitant when it comes to taking risks.  Carlos, the male lead, is hesitant about pursuing Dana, shies away from the conflict when it arises in the story, and finally submits to his feelings at the end.

 Blurb:

Content with his computer business, Carlos is happy with his choices in life…until a confident Nubian beauty walks into his store. Too bashful and insecure to unleash the romantic man inside, he is instantly attracted to Dana as she unknowingly changes his preconceived notions about gorgeous women who need every male at their beck and call.

But the truth comes out: Dana may have another agenda, and Carlos is ready to hide behind his glasses and computers. But will he combat his trust before this beauty walks out on him…for good?

Excerpt:

Whatever it was that overcame Carlos in that instance, he didn’t know. He was in Dana’s path in seconds, and before he knew it, his fingers were tangled in her hair. He pulled her into his embrace effortlessly and pressed his lips to hers. She breathed in a sharp intake of breath and stiffened only briefly. As their mouths meshed, her body became pliant within his arms.

He was doing with her what he’d wanted to the moment she stepped foot in his shop. They nipped softly at each other, but then both became more involved and the kisses turned deep and aggressive.

She broke apart and panted against him, her hand pressing against his chest as if pushing him away.

Her eyes were a mixture of confusion and lust.

“I’m sorry.” Carlos took a step back.

Dana moved toward him. “No, don’t be sorry for that.”

“That was wrong.”

She shook her head and wrapped her arm around his back. “No, it was so right.”

He smiled, and saw the acceptance in her gaze. The same truth that’d been there since day one. “You like that?”

She grinned back. “Yes, I definitely like when you take control.” Walking forward, she forced him further into the darkened room. “But you forget, I like to be in control too.”
