Cindy Spencer Pape – Get Your Happy-Ever-After Fix
Meet Cindy Spencer Pape!
Cindy Spencer Pape is an avid reader of romance, fantasy, mystery, and even more romance who firmly believes in happily-ever-after. Married for more than twenty-five years to her own, sometimes-kilted hero, she lives in southern Michigan with him and two grown sons, along with an ever-changing menagerie of pets. Cindy has been, among other things, a banker, a teacher, and an elected politician, but mostly an environmental educator, though now she is lucky enough to write full-time. Her degrees in zoology and animal behavior almost help her comprehend the three male humans who share her household.
First questions:
Beach or camping? Beach, all the way.
Bathing suit or mountain gear? Why? Well, I probably LOOK better in mountain gear, but I love to swim, so I’m definitely happier in a swimsuit.
Margaritas or Spritzers? (If you answer club soda, we’re gonna have to talk.) Margaritas, but I can’t handle much.
Please enter. Cabana boys are under that umbrella. We’ll even let you pick one to hold your shade…and your pen.
Where is one place you would love to spend the Summer? Why? I’d love to see England, Scotland and Ireland. I’ve always been fascinated by the history there. Though I’m not sure I’d get any writing done there, I’m sure I’d get LOTS of inspiration!
What is your ideal writing haven? Are there men or beach bunnies involved? A little cabana by the beach. No beach bunnies, please. Men? Well, at least one, with good hands and a bottle of massage oil…
What season do you write best? And why? It varies. Season seems to affect me less than whatever other garbage is going on in my life. I love sunshine and summer, but sometimes I want to go play in it, and then I don’t get much work done. The worst is always right around Christmas.
When plotting a book, what determines your setting and characters? There are a lot of factors. I write a lot of series, so often, characters and settings are already in place from the previous book. Otherwise? I like to play with stereotypes and mess around, like putting a Chicago cop on a Texas ranch or an ancient dragon in the steam tunnels of a Michigan college.
If you’re going on vacation, what items would I find in your bag? And why? Flip flops. Unless it’s snowing, this is my choice of footwear. Basic makeup, but not a ton. Who wants to take time to bother with more than the basics? My Nook for reading and my netbook for writing and email. A swimsuit, just in case I find a beach or pool. Jeans, t-shirts, (or sweaters if it’s colder) and one or two casual skirts. MAYBE a dress if I have a good enough reason to think I’ll need one.
What are you working on right now? Several projects. A new book in the Gaslight Chronicles, the finale of the Holiday Hearts series and another, super-secret new project.
What news would you like to share with your readers? Book 3 of my Urban Arcana series, Motor City Wolf, comes out from Carina Press on Aug. 29.

Blurb:
Matt Warren has always been the man of Summer’s dreams. He was her childhood imaginary playmate, her teen crush, and the wildly sexy fantasy lover of her adulthood. She’s always known he wasn’t real, but after experiencing his imaginative, passionate touch, no real man has ever measured up. However, alone on a beach shortly before her birthday, Summer discovers that the Holiday family magic hasn’t left her behind. Matt is real, standing on her beach, and he’s there to make Summer his in every way possible.
Matt has always known he has a gift as a dreamwalker, and that Summer was out there and would someday be his—if he didn’t get himself killed first. Now that his career as an Air Force pilot is over, he’s moved to Charleston to find Summer and teach her that their shared erotic dreams are even better in real life, and that their love can last a lifetime.
Excerpt:
Summer Holiday tossed and turned in the middle of a dream that had visited on and off her whole life. She knew she was dreaming, but she didn’t want it to end.
The sand was warm beneath her feet and the surf lapped softly against the shore. No one else was around, just the two of them. The handsome, golden-haired man gazed at her with his midnight-blue eyes. He reached for her and she walked into his arms. He was mostly naked, a pair of cut-off jeans his only covering. She had on a sundress, with a bikini underneath. This part of the dream was the same, had been since she could remember. As she’d gotten older though, it had grown more and more explicit. Now, sometimes the dream carried through until they’d both come, and Summer wanted that tonight. It had been a long week, and she needed some sort of release.
“Summer.” He murmured her name into her hair as he hugged her close. That had been added to the dream sometime in her teen years. They’d shared names and told each other about their lives. Her subconscious had built quite a character for her dream man. He was three years older than she, had parents who were divorced, a married sister, and since Summer’s college years, he’d been in the military. “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too, Matt.” Matthew Harrison Warren, that’s what she’d named him. Major Matt Warren. Her childhood dream friend who’d grown into her adult dream lover. “It’s been a long time.”
“I was in the hospital for a while,” he told her as he kissed her earlobe, the line of her neck. “I didn’t dream while they had me pumped full of drugs.”
This was her dream, not his. Still, she wasn’t going to waste it asking questions.

Wow! Cindy, what a list of publications. I don’t know where to start! Can you give a short run down of what your various series are? Ie, paranormal, mystery, etc.
That brief excerpt of Midsummer Dreams already has me desperate for a Margarita or something to cool me down.
Definitely hot!
July 24th, 2011 at 9:05 am
Thanks, Gabriella. I have a little bit about each title and/or series on my website, here.
http://www.cindyspencerpape.com/booklist.html
But the main series are; Holiday Hearts, Immortal Cravings, Geek Love, and almost everthing else at Ellora’s Cave, Resplendence and Total-E-Bound: Erotic paranormal. Urban Arcana at Carina Press is hot paranormal, erotic to some reviewers, not to others. The Gaslight Chronicles at Carina are Victorian Paranormal romances, and the Crazy H and Wayback series at the Wild Rose Press are steamy western contemporaries.
July 24th, 2011 at 10:02 am
I love that your stories are varied in heat level and topic. What I read today may not work for me tomorrow. But you always deliver the same qaulity.
Question: Do you write the ending of a scene before you write the actual scene? They’re complete and never overly wordy.
Mary George.
July 24th, 2011 at 10:37 am
Thanks, Mary! No, I’m a pretty linear writer, straight from beginning to end. I’m glad that my scene building works. I tend to think of it like a movie–where would you have the fade, or the cut to the next scene.
July 24th, 2011 at 10:09 am
I’m blown away by your publication list!
July 24th, 2011 at 10:38 am
Thanks, Margay! I like to keep busy.
July 24th, 2011 at 10:12 am
I had no idea of the numbers of books you’ve published. Very impressive. How do you find enough momentum to keep a series going?
July 24th, 2011 at 10:40 am
Thanks, Lynn! Sometimes I do find it hard to keep going on a series. Book 3 for some reason is always a killer for me, even if the series is longer. But I’m compulsive enough that leaving a series hanging just drives me crazy. I feel like I’m letting myself and my readers down, so I keep pushing through it. (Though to be honest, there are a couple series that were cut off in the middle, for one reason or another. I hope to get back to them some day.)
July 24th, 2011 at 10:34 am
Oh my, I too am dumbfounded by the number of books you’ve written and had published. I am really intrigued by the Geek Love books & the Urban Arcana series. What was your favorite series to write?
July 24th, 2011 at 10:43 am
I *do* have a special soft spot for my geeks. And the Urban Arcana books, being set in my hometown of Detroit are close to my heart. i have to admit, right now I’m having a blast with the steampunk romance too. What can I say? I love variety!
July 24th, 2011 at 11:08 am
I’ve just started to read some steampunk and I’m loving it too!
July 24th, 2011 at 11:50 am
Phantoms and Photographs from Carina Press is a FREE novella for download, if you want to try out a taste of my Gaslight world.
July 24th, 2011 at 12:34 pm
Awesome, thanks so much, going to grab it so I can give it a read!
July 24th, 2011 at 12:39 pm
What a wide variety of books you write, I have read your Wayback books and really enjoyed them. Enjoyed reading the blurb and excerpt for Midsummer Dreams was very hot!
July 24th, 2011 at 1:15 pm
Thanks, Jean! The Gaslight books from Carina are at a similar heat level, and my Crazy H westerns from Wild Rose actually tie into the Wayback stories. Most of the rest are a whole lot steamier.
July 24th, 2011 at 1:38 pm
Congratulations on being married for so many years! Does your husband enjoy your writings or give any contributions?
July 24th, 2011 at 3:07 pm
Thanks, Joder. I’m very lucky when it comes to my dh. While he’s not a big romance fan, so he doesn’t usually read whole books, he’s great at helping me brainstorm concepts, figure out how to blow things up, and best of all, listens to me whine when the writing isn’t going well. He always encourages me to keep writing, which is priceless.
July 24th, 2011 at 1:50 pm
Your books look lovly and i cant wait to read some of them. The covers are hot on all them as well:):)
July 24th, 2011 at 3:08 pm
Thanks, Loretta! I’ve been very lucky when it comes to covers!
July 24th, 2011 at 2:27 pm
I love the variety of genre’s you utilize and your excellent storytelling:)Can’t wait for Motor City Werewolf–it’s already on my TBB list!
July 24th, 2011 at 3:09 pm
Thanks, Paris! It’s up for preorder now. I’m working hard on Motor City Mage, the final book in the quartet, which is scheduled for March.
July 24th, 2011 at 2:36 pm
I love shifter books and am assuming yours are! Great!
July 24th, 2011 at 3:13 pm
Diane, SOME of my books are shifter books, others not. In the Urban Arcana, Immortal Cravings, and Gaslight Chronicles series, shifters make up part of the world, and some of the heroes/heroines are while others aren’t. Of my non-series books, Curses is a werewolf story, while Georgie and the Dragon features, big surprise, a dragon shifter.
July 24th, 2011 at 3:15 pm
Oh–and I almost forgot the Heroes of Stone series and its prequel, Between a Rock and a Hard-On. The gargoyles are all shifters and several of their heroines are as well.
July 24th, 2011 at 5:21 pm
You seriously amaze me! My mouth totally dropped at that list so I had to post it up! I’ll have to go through your list one by one!
Hope you’re having fun! And remember to come out of hiding! lol
July 24th, 2011 at 6:28 pm
Hiding? Right here, having a blast.
July 25th, 2011 at 5:44 pm
I’m so glad you’re having fun!
July 24th, 2011 at 5:31 pm
Fellow Michigan girl here, exciting that your books are set here!
July 24th, 2011 at 6:30 pm
Thanks Janet. Only a few in Michigan, unfortunately. The Urban Arcana series (Detroit), the Geek Love books (fictional small college town in the Irish Hills) and Curses (fictional small town in the UP. I do love writing about my home state when I can though.
July 24th, 2011 at 6:22 pm
Oh my goodness Cindy, that is an impressive backlist! I’m intrigued by your super-secret project. I love the blurb for Midsummer Dreams. The cover isn’t too bad either!
July 24th, 2011 at 6:31 pm
Thanks, Stacie! I adore that cover, too. And the Holiday books are light and fun, lightly paranormal, while still being very steamy.
July 24th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
wow! what a list! congrats to you! Midsummers Dream sounds great! I love ellora cave books. so good! thank you for sharing!
July 25th, 2011 at 9:07 am
Thanks, Shadow!
July 24th, 2011 at 8:16 pm
Fantastic list. You make me see that my dreams of having a list of my own is a possibility. Yeah, I only have two published and one on the way, but you inspired me to keep it up. I love that you write many genres of romance. Midsummer Dreams captured me–ha, Summer is my nickname!:)
July 25th, 2011 at 9:09 am
JM, thanks so much. There are so many factors in a career, a big one being time to write, and what length. A lot of the erotic romances are novellas, so that helps. But when I get down on myself it’s nice to have that backlist to look at and realize that even with one slow year, overall, I’m doing okay.
July 24th, 2011 at 10:31 pm
what a great excerpt,i can’t wait to read the rest of the book and see what happens next.

I got so curious about your secret project!
July 25th, 2011 at 9:11 am
Tessa, it’s something my agent suggested, that would be a world apart from my romances. If it actually happens, I’ll be sure to let you know!
July 25th, 2011 at 9:48 am
I like the premise of Midsummer Dreams. Sounds like a good read.

July 25th, 2011 at 9:59 am
Thanks, Anne. Each of the Holiday family runs into a different kind of magic, so the series is much more lighthearted and fun than some of my paranormals.
July 25th, 2011 at 10:14 am
You are a busy busy woman! I don’t know how I have missed your books, but I am going to find them today!
July 25th, 2011 at 10:17 am
Thanks so much, Patsy!
July 25th, 2011 at 1:20 pm
Hi Cindy,
What a great interview. I’ve been slowly making my way through your book list, especially loving your shifter stories.
Thanks for the chance to read Midsummer Dreams.

Hi Cathy! I haven’t had as many new books this year, so maybe you can catch up a bit.
July 25th, 2011 at 1:27 pm
Elected politician? Something new about you I didn’t know.
Your books are wonderfully written as all your terrific reviews attest to…much success to you!
July 25th, 2011 at 1:43 pm
4 years as township clerk. It was an interesting experience. One I never, ever, want to repeat, LOL!
July 25th, 2011 at 2:05 pm
Hi Cindy,
Wow I’m with Marianne on the elected politician. You are quite the Jackie of all trades.
I spent some summers in St. Joseph Michigan along the Lake. It was so beautiful there. I love the fact that you write in a multi genre.
Is there one you prefer over the other?
I love the excerpt for Mid Summer Dreams. I read and excerpt the other day on a promo and I said to myself, I have to have this one. I love books like that.
I have a feeling this one is going to make me cry.

July 25th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
Thanks so much, Teresa. I’ve had a pretty varied background it’s true. Maybe that’s why I can’t stick to one genre for too long. I just love variety. Paranormal is probably my first love, but then I enjoy contemporaries and historicals too. As long as it’s romance, it’s all good.
BTW, St. Joseph’s and the lakeshore are beautiful. I’m in the middle of the state and which I could get to the shore more than I do.
July 25th, 2011 at 8:27 pm
Wow! Midsummer Dreams looks great!

I looked up steam and sorcery and I’m intriqued. I’ve been reading more and more steam punk lately, so this will be up my alley. I already have Photographs and Phantoms on my kindle so I’m going to bump that to the top of the queue.

Melora, I hope you enjoy P&P. I love mixing history with fantasy and Science Fiction, so the Gaslight world is just loads of fun to write.

Hello Cindy!
Love the chats on the LRC and the other ones as well
You rock with your books, and I so enjoy them.
I’m with you on the flip flops! I hate shoes, and I too wear only boots when I have to. I have 7 months of winter here in the Alaska interior, so when I don’t have to wear shows or boot..I’m a happy camper…LOL
Thank you for the contest & your sharing a bit of your self…*S*
