Debora Dennis – Spice Romance with a Slice of Adventure
Meet Debora Dennis!
Hooked on all things romantic for as long as she can remember, Debora Dennis has never stopped believing in the fairy tale dream of a Happily Ever After. Since picking up her first Barbara Cartland novel from the middle school library so many years ago, she’s rarely been without a romance, either in her bag or on her nightstand (and now on her Nook!)
A firm believer in happy endings, she writes romance sprinkled with spice and adventure.
Debora and her own hero live in New York and spend their days raising their three kids along with Godzilla the lizard and two spoiled cats named Oreo and Rocky. She can usually be found at her computer early in the morning and late at night with a mug of coffee and a bag of Lindt chocolate truffles keeping her sane.
First Questions:
Beach or camping? Ugh – I hate both, but I guess I’d have to pick the beach since I love the sound of the ocean.
I guess you can stay since you at least like the sound of the ocean. Bathing suit or mountain gear? Why? My bathing suit is usually a t-shirt and shorts. Mostly because I’m frequently cold and dislike the sun.
Now I’m tempted to drop you off on an island…Margaritas or Spritzers? (If you answer club soda, we’re gonna have to talk.) OMG, I’m a margarita girl, my favorite would be a Mango Margarita…yummy!
Yay! Finally something you like! Please enter. Cabana boys are under that umbrella. We’ll even let you pick one to hold your shade…and your pen.
Where is one place you would love to spend the Summer? Why? I think it was a cruise where I wake up in a different port everyday all summer long would be the best way to spend a summer! I can only imagine the stories that would be filling up my notebooks, full of local flavor and sights. (And don’t get me started on the food on the cruise, it’s a good thing I don’t wear a bathing suit!)
What is your ideal writing haven? Are there men or beach bunnies involved? Actually, I need to be alone and it needs to be QUIET. Such a boring answer, I know, but it’s true.
What season do you write best? And why? The fall. There is just something about the crisp air, the smell of leaves and the upcoming holiday season that gives me that extra spark when I sit down in the morning to write.
When plotting a book, what determines your setting and characters? I never set out to determine my setting or my characters – they’re just…there. The characters just seem to appear in my head and they pretty much let me know where their story takes place. Weird? I don’t know.
What are you working on right now? A quirky paranormal set in a 50’s diner.
What news would you like to share with your readers? My novella “A Knight in Her Arms” will be available within the next few weeks. Previously published as “Her Knight Before Christmas” it’s gone through a revision and has a wonderful new cover too!

Giveaway: E-copy of The Kandy Shoppe
Kandace Parker wants nothing more than to have a thriving ice cream parlor, but her run down equipment isn’t cooperating. Watching her profits melt away each time her freezer breaks is only half her problem – the other half is her sexy repairman, Jason Chapman.
Jason is man enough to admit he’s made some mistakes in his personal life; the biggest one was pushing Kandy away years ago. He knows the Ice Cream Queen won’t willingly give him a second chance, so he devises a plan to keep him front and center in her life with the hopes of wearing her down.
How far will Jason go to get his second chance? How far will Kandy go to keep her freezer running? When desires collide in The Kandy Shoppe, they will have to decide if love can be the best dessert.

I LOVE the sound of the book you’re working on, very unique theme. Since I see that you have 2 eReaders (I do too), what do you think has been beneficial about the digital revolution and what do you think has been negative?
July 25th, 2011 at 12:41 pm
Hmm, I think I’ve fallen in love with my eReaders and I don’t know if there is a downside (LOL) I do know that I am more inclined to seek out any new releases on my digital readers first before I look for them in print.

I can’t wait to see Knight in Her Arms out!

I’m also a fall writer! If I can tote my laptop outside for a few hours and get the best of both worlds, I am one happy camper…even though I also hate camping
Great interview.

I smiled while reading the blurb. I got a feeling the handyman is going to make her forget all about cooling anything. Hot cover.

What a fun premise for The Kandy Shoppe. I can imagine all the complications Kandace will find herself facing.
I have to ask, with three kids, do you really manage to write in quiet? LOL! I’ve got three kids too–all boys. I can write around them for the most part. Music, forget it. Don’t know how others do it. TV–depends. But it’s rare I achieve total silence. ( :

Oh yeah, with three kids writing in silence is not easy to achieve. I usually write early in the morning while the house is quiet or late at night!

Great interview! I hate camping too and I would only go to the beach if I can write or read the whole time. No grimy, seaweed water for me, thanks! Looking forward to your upcoming release!

This sounds like a geat book!

How funny, I just mentioned Barbara Cartland on another post. I started off with her too, now I would find them ridiculous (and repetitive), but I almost swooned over her heros.

Anne, I used to devour those books – but yes, if I read them today, I’m sure I couldn’t stomach them LOL

Hi Debora,
Knight in Her Arms sounds to be a big hit. I can’t wait to see the cover for this book.
Okay my question for you is that you said you pretty much let your characters write themselves. Does this mean you let them give themselves names, or do you work the characters around the name that best suits them?

I pick names, but know very quickly if they are working for the characters in my head (if they aren’t happy with the name they stop talking to me…LOL)

Hi, Debora!
Just wanted to add that the winner of Deb’s book is going to be very happy with it! Great read!

I love, love, LOVE the thought of a paranormal in a 50s diner. Can’t WAIT until it comes out.
And I’m with you … loathe camping and swim suits should be illegal. Not overly fond of sun, either. lol
