Entangled Publishing

Meet Liz Pelletier!

Publisher/Senior Editor at Entangled Publishing!

Liz Pelletier is co-founder and managing partner of Savvy Media Services, which owns Savvy Authors, Savvy Readers, and Entangled Publishing. In addition to running a successful online writing community, Liz teaches courses on editing, query writing, and contract negotiations. She has also held board positions for various writing associations, managed and organized several writing conferences, and hosted a variety of free educational workshops for aspiring and established authors. Although she served part-time for twenty years as the editor for a broadly-circulated, weekly industry newspaper, she ran her own successful freelance consulting business for more than twenty years, often hired to leverage technological advances and more efficient workflow designs to increase profit margins. She uses these same skills to oversee all aspects of book production and distribution at Entangled.

First question:

Eggnog or Mimosas? Are you old enough to drink? Mimosas unless the eggnog is spiked.

We’re also taking pictures with Santa. Please enter. Drinks are served by the elves in the corner.

What’s your favorite holiday and why? Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because we always spend the day playing games with the kids while the turkey is basting. And there’s pie.

Did you ask Santa for anything good? A vacation. He said it was on back-order.

What’s your favorite place to spend the holidays? We always travel for the holidays, so I’ve spent Christmas in a chalet in Aspen, on the beach in Florida, at the inn in Vermont where The Newhart Show was filmed, in a private villa overlooking the ocean in Mexico. Sadly, this year my kids are in Hawaii for Xmas while I stayed home to work. But next year it’s Greece!

What is your favorite Christmas memory? My kids 4th Christmas. It’s the first time they really “got” Santa Clause and could open their own presents. It took about fifteen minutes total. LOL

Do you have personal resolutions for the New Years? Anything interesting? For the last two years, I’ve worked some pretty brutal hours. First, getting Savvy Authors up and running and then this last year working to establish Entangled Publishing. I’ve promised myself next year I’ll spend more time with my kids, who’ve been so understanding that Mom’s laptop is permanently attached at the wrists. I’ve schedule surgery in 2012.

Why do you publish romance? Who doesn’t love to read a fun story that ends in happily ever after?

What do you love in running a pub? My favorite part of this business is helping authors’ dreams of one day holding their book in their hands come true.

What advice would you give aspiring authors? Treat your writing like a business. Always act professionally, be on time and prepared, and write the most saleable product you can.

Who are some of your favorite authors? Well, all of my authors are my favorites, of course! Some of the authors I personally edit who have recent releases… Kelley York has such a devastating voice, she can slay me with a single phrase. Jane Kindred weaves words together like poetry, constructing the most intricate and delicate worlds I’ve ever seen. Nina Croft makes me forget I’m editing every time I’m working on one of her manuscripts, they’re so exciting and fun to read. Jennifer L. Armentrout dishes out sexual tension like pie—and you know how I love pie, plus she can make me laugh out loud even though I may have read a scene five times already. Jus Accardo has some of the snarkiest characters ever who say and do the craziest things. Man, I love snark. Natalie J. Damschroder writes the yummiest heroes that you just can’t help but root for. And Natalie Anderson can make me laugh and cry at the same time.

What goals do you have for the new upcoming year? Sleep more.

What news would you like to share with your readers? We have a really huge announcement going out the first week in January, so stay tuned for some exciting news!

Hi Chris! Thanks for stopping by. I hope your Christmas backing turned out wonderfully. I love to cook and will give Julia a run for her money, but I can’t bake a single desert. Not even pre-cut cookies. LOL So I’m very envious of your baking abilities! Happy holidays!

      RAZ!! : )
Our traveling at xmas sounds glamorous, but really I just hate taking down holiday decorations. LOL I asked the kids years ago if they’d rather just travel for the holidays or stay at home and acquire more junk. Both of my twins agreed they’d rather spend their xmas money on travel. I have the best kids ever. :)

      Happy holidays!

And Nina Croft is an auto-buy for me! I’m off to check out some of the others. I can’t resist an author that can make me laugh and cry.

    • Liz Pelletier Says:

      Hi Chelle,
I’ve heard some people still have vacations. Maybe they’ll send us pics? ;)

I adore Nina Croft. I think I’ve contracted 14 books from her this year, and I just read a thriller she wrote that is ah-mazing and told her if she doesn’t contract it with me I’ll fly to Spain and beg like a baby. She’s just so talented, she makes writing look effortless. (I’m totally one of her biggest fangirls. LOL)

But I will say the “announcement” for Entangled, well a couple of them, will likely double my workload next year but in such a fantastic way. Hopefully it means we get to contract more books! :)

    • Liz Pelletier Says:

Ohhh so I need to edit faster, eh, Gabbi? ;) There are SOOO many good books coming out in 2012. I think we have close to 8 per month, most months, in our main line and we’re about to expand that. :) Glad you’re enjoying our titles! Everyone at Entangled is there because we love what we do, and I think that comes through in our books.

      Happy holidays!
      ~Liz

  • Shellie Says:

Uh…late Merry Christmas?! Lol, wait I told u that on twitter before Christma so technically I’m not late. Just wanted to remind you how awesome you are and so happy for you that this year has been aweaome but busy. I hope you get that backordered vacation! I can’t wait for Onyx (I really want your job lol)

    • Liz Pelletier Says:

      Hi, Shellie!
Oh man… Onyx. *swoon* It’s not even funny how hard I’m crushing on Daemon. I thought I loved him after reading Obsidian. And then I read Shadows and thought, nope, I think I love Dawson more. And then I read Onyx… Daemon FTW! I feel like the biggest cougar on the planet. hehe In fact, I was telling Heather all about Onyx on the phone last night and how incredibly amazing JLA is, and she said I was gushing like I was in high school with a crush on the star quarterback. Well, so? LOL It’s ah-amazing. It’s epic. It’s just freaking awesome. Can’t wait until we can fangirl him together on twitter. :)

I read the sequel to Touch this week, too, which is from Kale’s POV, and *swoon* he’s amazing, too. Not nearly as sweet and innocent as we think. ;)

And Belphagor from The Fallen Queen! OMG. The sequel, The Midnight Court, is breathtaking.

And I had the pleasure of being the Q&A reader for a YA Stacy edited by Tiffany Truitt which is releasing in May 2012, I believe, called Chosen Ones. The language is absolutely haunting. I’ve only sent it to one reviewer so far, and she kept texting me on my phone while she read it gushing at how creepy and awesome it was. That one is going to be huge!

I’m editing another YA by Stephanie Thomas called Luminosity this week that is so good. It’s from the POV of the heroine who is a Seer, a genetically engineered human developed in a dystopian future to help prevent another major war, who foresees an even worse future by their own hands. Scary good. Yeah, that’s the best way to describe that one.

And then there’s Lea Nolan’s MG/YA cross-over Conjure, the first in the new Hoodoo Apprentice series. My 13yo daughter read this one and refused to ever speak to me again if I didn’t contract it and edit it myself (so she could help ROFL). It’s a cross between Pirates of the Caribbean and Goonies. So much fun!! I get to start that one next week, which is beyond cool.

And those are just the YA titles! On the adult side, I just finished first round edits on my first Sottish historical, Captured Heart by Heather McCollum. I LOVE me some Highlander loving and this one is epic!!

Plus I did first round edits on a new category romance for our Indulgence line by Nina Croft last week, and I’m expecting those back for second round edits by the first. That woman can write ANYTHING! lol

And guess what is waiting in my inbox right now? A novella kicking off Candace Havens new steampunk series set in the old west. It’s kind of cross between Supernatural (but it’s the heroine and her butler who fight things that go bump in the night while slinging witty banter) and Wild, Wild West (with tons of fun steampunk inventions that keep the hero in constant awe of the heroine’s well… awesomeness.)

So yeah, I agree. I have the best job on the planet. :)

And who would trade that week for Hawaii?? Not me! lol

      Happy holidays!
      ~Liz

  • Shellie Says:

And I hate my phone cause I so wasn’t done with that last comment however it thought it I was! I justed finished Touch &I can’t wait for book 2. 2012 is going to be an awesome year, I wish you the best, lots of sleep, more time with the kids & allI the good stuff you deserve =)
    <3 Shellie

    • Liz Pelletier Says:

LOL Well, I wrote you a tome above. And Touch has a novella sequel coming out in February from Kale’s POV called UNTOUCHED (I made the cover for it yesterday, so we’ll be revealing that shortly, too). And then the sequel TOXIC is releasing I think in June 2012. This is such a wonderful series. I also contracted another YA series from Jus Accardo, The Gatekeepers, about a high school chick who discovers she’s not entirely human and has inherited the responsibility of guarding an interdimensional gate and never quite gets the hang of things. Loads of fun! I think we’re talking about releasing that series late, late 2012, depending on whether we extend the Denazen series beyond the contracted 5 books or not. I dunno if it’s just me or not, but Denazen just feels like a never-ending WB TV show in the making. Spread the word. LOL

      Take care!
      ~Liz

      • Shellie Says:

Wb tv show that’s too funny. I would like a Kale (only if he didn’t kill me!) I sent Misa an email to review Chosen Ones (I think) cause it looked so good when the cover reveal was released. And omg daemon/dawson/daemon I wants! I made the cover of Shadows my wallpaper on my phone…yea im horrible lol. Can’t wait to get Onyx then we can tweet away and swoon. 2012 is sogonna rock. Just publish everything before 12/21/12 lmao =)

  • Kaye Manro Says:

  • Sarah McNeal Says:

Just reading all that you do made me exhausted. I can’t imagine where you come up with the energy to do all that.
I always played board games with my niece and nephew while the turkey roasted. Even though they’re grown, we still do–and we are teaching the great niece how to play cut throat Parcheezi.
Spending the holidays abroad sounds like such fun.

    • Liz Pelletier Says:

      Hi Amanda,
I’ve read all of those, and I have to say… They’re fantastic! ;) Shadows made me fall in love with Dawson and Onyx made me remember why I loved Daemon. Total fangirl crush going on now. And Chosen Ones is one of those books you can’t stop thinking about for days after reading. Toxic is just non-stop fun, although it gets pretty dark, too. Yeah, I love all of our books. lol You should try some of our other YA’s! Ward Against Death is super fun. And Hushed is beyond creepy beautiful. Oh and The Marked Son has a seriously hot hero who discovers he’s the unwanted son of a really dark fae. Awesome goodness in all of them. :)

      Happy New Year!
      ~Liz

    Hello Liz!
I’ll be sure to keep my eyes open for the big EP announcement!

  • Melora Brock Says:

I’m really curious about this announcement! I also love the idea of travelling for Christmas, I just wish I could afford it!

    • Liz Pelletier Says:

      Hi Melora!
You’d be suprised what you can afford if you don’t buy Christmas trees, decorations, and presents. One Christmas, years ago, I added it all up and made the offhand comment to my kids we could have all flown to Mexico for a week for the amount of money we’d spent that month. Both kids said they’d have rather have travelled. Now the kids all agree to trade their presents for plane tickets. :) I enjoy creating fabulous memories and sharing new experiences with my kids so much more than stacking their closets with “things” they’re going to forget they even have two months later. Since so few people travel during Christmas to vacation destinations, we usually get really good deals, too! :)

Hope you have a wonderful New Year!

But…err…you might want to hold off on Greece until that Euro stuff settles. :) Just sayin’ ;)
Not the most stable economy right now.

I watched Entangled with interest, and think you’ve done an awesome job right from the start. Here is hoping 2012 is twice as successful as 2011 :)
