Jill Marie Landis
Meet Jill Marie Landis!
JILL MARIE LANDIS’S twenty-five+ novels have earned distinguished awards and slots on the USA TODAY Top 50 and the New York Times Best Sellers Plus. A seven-time finalist for Romance Writers of America’s RITA Award in Single Title Historical and Contemporary Romance as well as a Golden Heart and RITA Award winner, Jill Marie resides in Hawaii with her husband. Her recent releases are HEART OF LIES (2011) and HEART OF GLASS (2012) from Zondervan and MAI TAI ONE ON (2011), the first of a series of hilarious mysteries set in Hawaii from Belle Books.
First question:
Eggnog or Mimosas? Are you old enough to drink?
I’ll start with mimosas and work my way up to some eggnog and top it off with a Mai Tai.
We’re also taking pictures with Santa, did you bring a gift for him? (Maybe a new release or a pretty book cover…) Here you go!
When an obnoxious neighbor with a grudge is found dead in the Tiki Goddess Bar luau pot, suspicion falls on the Goddess staff. With the help of a quirky dance troupe of over-the-hill Hula Maidens, Em Johnson, manager, and a cast of characters must ban together to find the killer and solve the mystery before the next pupu party.
Please enter. Drinks are served by the elves in the corner.
Opps! I think I may have just stepped on one of those little buggers.
What’s your favorite holiday and why?
Still has to be the 4th of July. Beach weather. Bar-b-que and hula dancing. Fireworks in the sand. You can’t beat it.
Did you ask Santa for anything good?
I asked him to end the political debate shows. Please. And I’d like world peace. But if he can’t come up with those, then I’d like him to bring me a secretary for 2012.
What’s your favorite place to spend the holidays?
With my family in California…until I can afford to fly them all to Hawaii for Christmas.
What is your favorite Christmas memory?
Singing Christmas Carols with ukuleles and guitars around the table on Christmas Eve.
Do you have personal resolutions for the New Years? Anything interesting?
Definitely be more productive writing…and maybe go back to Tahiti. In fact, I think I might go to Tahiti first and then start writing more pages every day…or maybe I’ll go to … I’m not good on resolutions, obviously.
Why do you write romance?
I like happy endings even if they are only on paper.
How long have you been writing? And how would you describe your publication journey?
I’ve been writing since I could hold a pencil and read. I was first published in 1988 and I’ve had at least one book out nearly every year since then, including anthology contributions. I think my journey has been exciting, joyful, terrifying, thrilling, satisfying and blessed. I never take it for granted.
Are you a plotter or pantser? What is your routine?
Both a plotter and a pantser mixed together. Routine? I wish I had a routine.
What characteristics do all your heroes/heroines have in all your stories?
A positive outlook. If they don’t start with one they develop one through the hard knocks of the plot.
What writing resources do you abide by as a writer?
It depends on the book.
What advice would you give aspiring authors?
Read, read, read and write, write, write.
I have a page of information for aspiring writers at : http://www.jillmarielandis.com/advicetowriters.htm
What are you working on right now?
I’m working on Book 2 of the Tiki Goddess Mysteries. The working title is TWO TO MANGO.
What news would you like to share with your readers?

Merry Christmas. I just love to snuggle up with a good book on a dull dark day . Especially while stuck inside during a snow storm in Alaska.
Hawaii is on my list of winter getaway destinations.

Hi Marilyn! Alaska! Brrrrr. Thanks for taking time to comment. Hope you are enjoying the holiday. Aloha, Jill

I totally agree with you Marilyn, from one Alaska resident to another, lol. You can’t go wrong reading a Jill Marie Landis book. Hawaii is a fab place to go to get away, took my my daughter last January to see where she was born. We need to figure out how to go every year.
Merry Christmas, Jill and all, and wishing everyone much success for the coming new year.

I have been wanting to pick up the Tiki Goddess mystery only couldn’t remember the title or who wrote it. So glad to find this interview b/c I recognized the cover immediately. I love mysteries like this and will pick it up from Amazon today. It’ll make a great vacation read before I have to go back to work. ( :
Have a very happy holiday season!
December 27th, 2011 at 10:51 am
Gabriella,
Hope you enjoy the book. It’s short on mystery (actually I think it’s too easily solved) but it’s long on laughs. My first attempt at a cozy sleuth novel…had a ball writing it and I’m working on #2. Thanks for stopping by. Aloha, Jill

I love the cosy mystery genre. This book looks excellent!
December 27th, 2011 at 7:56 pm
How positively exotic to live in Hawaii. I am so jealous. Mysteries set in Hawaii sound like such fun stories to read. 25+ novels? You must have calluses on your fingertips.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:24 am
Sarah,
Calluses? Not really. I’ve been writing for years. You can check out all my titles at http://www.jillmarielandis.com Hawaii is a great place to live but hard to get to. We enjoy visiting family on the “mainland” and try to make at least 3 trips a year. Aloha, Jill

You know that is an unusual answer. Most people don’t consider the 4th a favorite holiday. I do love that time of the year though
Mai tias are awesome..that was a great interview!! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season!!

Nikki,
Well, the 4th in Hawaii is always a big beach party day and at night everyone sets off fireworks at the beach. It’s wonderful and warm. Thanks for stopping by. Happy New Year.

I don’t think I would want to join you for Christmas. Christmas is about snow for me. This year we haven’t had any, and it’s been hard to get ready – put up lights, do the shopping
December 28th, 2011 at 10:17 am
Anne,
You should try getting into the spirit when it’s sunny, 85 degrees and there are palm trees swaying. But it’s still Christmas, only low key.

I’ve recently moved to Hawaii so I love reading any books that take place here. Although I’m still trying to find the great bars and the hot men mentioned in those books…
January 1st, 2012 at 3:42 pm
Marissa,
You have to remember I’m writing fiction! Hope you find a great bar and a great man on island. J.
December 29th, 2011 at 1:21 am
Hi, Jill Marie! Lovely interview–glad to hear about the upcoming titles, too! What do you like most about writing in different genres? And is it difficult switching gears, say from an inspirational to a more mainstream contemporary?
Hoping your celebrating this season’s been merry and memorable!

January 1st, 2012 at 3:43 pm
Hi Fedora,
I find it refreshing to switch genres within the romance genre…maybe they are subgenre? It gets boring for me anyway, writing the same local and time period over and over. It’s fun to shake things up and to also use a contemporary voice.
Aloha!
December 29th, 2011 at 2:37 am
Mai Tai One On sounds like such a fun read and the cover looks it as well. Mysteries are fun to solve and I get to play detective.
January 1st, 2012 at 3:45 pm
Na,
Well personally I think the mystery in Mai Tai is easy to solve but the laughs are fun. I’m going to work harder on book 2 to set up a more mysterious mystery. Happy New Year!
December 29th, 2011 at 7:40 am
Mai Tai One On sounds like it would be a fun read! I love the bright colors on the cover and it would be fun to get lost in a tropical story during the cold winter months.
Have a wonderful New Year’s.

I love clever word plays and Mai Tai One On is just that.
January 1st, 2012 at 3:50 pm

You’ll like the next title too. It’s called Two to Mango (as in two to tango!)
I’m having a ball with these books. Hope you get a chance to enjoy one. Aloha, J.

Happy New Year Jill,
I will be checking our your Zondervan series as a possible gift for my mom. She likes to read, but prefers stories a little more tame than I do. The Irish Angels might be just what she is looking for. Are there going to be more titles in the series or is it just a trilogy?
drainbamaged.gzymo at gmail.com
January 1st, 2012 at 3:47 pm
Hi Kathryn,
I’m sure your mom (and you!) will enjoy the Irish Angels series. There are some good prices right now if she has a kindle. I’ve heard from my readers that they enjoyed them as much as my mainstream romances…just sans sex. Mai Tai is a hoot and I don’t think there is anything there that would offend your mom, either. Have a wonderful New Year and thank you! J.
