Jill Marie Landis

Meet Jill Marie Landis!

JILL MARIE LANDIS’S twenty-five+ novels have earned distinguished awards and slots on the USA TODAY Top 50 and the New York Times Best Sellers Plus. A seven-time finalist for Romance Writers of America’s RITA Award in Single Title Historical and Contemporary Romance as well as a Golden Heart and RITA Award winner, Jill Marie resides in Hawaii with her husband. Her recent releases are HEART OF LIES (2011) and HEART OF GLASS (2012) from Zondervan and MAI TAI ONE ON (2011), the first of a series of hilarious mysteries set in Hawaii from Belle Books.

First question:

Eggnog or Mimosas? Are you old enough to drink?

I’ll start with mimosas and work my way up to some eggnog and top it off with a Mai Tai.

We’re also taking pictures with Santa, did you bring a gift for him? (Maybe a new release or a pretty book cover…)  Here you go!

Blurb:

When an obnoxious neighbor with a grudge is found dead in the Tiki Goddess Bar luau pot, suspicion falls on the Goddess staff. With the help of a quirky dance troupe of over-the-hill Hula Maidens, Em Johnson, manager, and a cast of characters must ban together to find the killer and solve the mystery before the next pupu party.

Please enter. Drinks are served by the elves in the corner.

Opps! I think I may have just stepped on one of those little buggers.

What’s your favorite holiday and why?

Still has to be the 4th of July. Beach weather. Bar-b-que and hula dancing. Fireworks in the sand. You can’t beat it.

Did you ask Santa for anything good?

I asked him to end the political debate shows. Please. And I’d like world peace. But if he can’t come up with those, then I’d like him to bring me a secretary for 2012.

What’s your favorite place to spend the holidays?

With my family in California…until I can afford to fly them all to Hawaii for Christmas.

What is your favorite Christmas memory?

Singing Christmas Carols with ukuleles and guitars around the table on Christmas Eve.

Do you have personal resolutions for the New Years? Anything interesting?

Definitely be more productive writing…and maybe go back to Tahiti. In fact, I think I might go to Tahiti first and then start writing more pages every day…or maybe I’ll go to … I’m not good on resolutions, obviously.

Why do you write romance?

I like happy endings even if they are only on paper.

How long have you been writing? And how would you describe your publication journey?

I’ve been writing since I could hold a pencil and read. I was first published in 1988 and I’ve had at least one book out nearly every year since then, including anthology contributions. I think my journey has been exciting, joyful, terrifying, thrilling, satisfying and blessed. I never take it for granted.

Are you a plotter or pantser? What is your routine?

Both a plotter and a pantser mixed together. Routine? I wish I had a routine.

What characteristics do all your heroes/heroines have in all your stories?

A positive outlook. If they don’t start with one they develop one through the hard knocks of the plot.

What writing resources do you abide by as a writer?

It depends on the book.

What advice would you give aspiring authors?

Read, read, read and write, write, write.

I have a page of information for aspiring writers at : http://www.jillmarielandis.com/advicetowriters.htm

Jill Marie Landis – New York Times Bestselling Author and RWA Rita Award Winner

  Meet Jill Marie Landis!

Jill Marie Landis’ twenty plus novels have earned distinguished awards and recognition on national bestseller lists like USA TODAY Top 50 Best Sellers and the New York Times Best Sellers Plus. She is a seven-time finalist for Romance Writers of America’s RITA Award in Single Title and Contemporary Romance as well as a Golden Heart and RITA Award winner. Jill Marie resides in Hawaii with her husband. When she’s not writing or sitting on the beach reading, she enjoys visiting with family and friends, raising orchids, working in her garden, plunking on the ukulele, dancing the hula and quilting. Her latest releases are MAI TAI ONE ON (July 2011) and HEART OF LIES (March 2011). HEART OF GLASS will be released in March of 2012.

First questions:

Beach or camping?

Beach, beach, beach. So many beaches, so little time!

Bathing suit or mountain gear? Why?

Modest bathing suit…hey, things are drooping.

Margaritas or Spritzers? (If you answer club soda, we’re gonna have to talk.)

Tequila on the rocks with a slice of lime and a salt rim.

Or a great Mai Tai, of course.

Please enter. Cabana boys are under that umbrella. We’ll even let you pick one to hold your shade…and your pen.

Cabana boy, Cabana men. Whatever!

Where is one place you would love to spend the Summer? Why?

On the beach just a few houses down the street. Why? Because I can get there anytime I want, it’s free, the ocean is clear and blue and flat this time of year.

What is your ideal writing haven? Are there men or beach bunnies involved?

My ideal haven is the beach I just mentioned. Under an umbrella. Plenty to watch, a place to read and GREAT scenery.

What season do you write best? And why?

Anytime but mostly closer to deadline…I start writing like a fiend.

Have you ever been on a writer’s retreat? What’s one embarrassing moment you’ve had?

I have been on a few writer’s retreats, not that there was a lot of writing done but there was plenty of gossip and brainstorming. I can’t remember the embarrassing moments, no doubt because of the choice of beverages noted above….

What inspires you to write during the summer?

We have gotten in the habit of eating and look forward to checks.

When plotting a book, what determines your setting and characters?

Right now I’m working on book 2 of a series of Tiki Goddess Mysteries (great summer reads, by the way) which are set on Kauai. The characters were inspired by the island lifestyle and hula.

If you’re going on vacation, what items would I find in your bag? And why?

Things to read (that’s what got me into this in the first place…reading), suntan lotion (I’m a tan-orexic), a yellow legal pad and lots of pens (for writing on the beach or under a palm tree), sunglasses, a couple of swimsuits, and a pareau (some people call them sarongs).

What is one thing you cannot live without during Summer? Okay, you can list two things…

Good books and getting out in the sunshine, sitting on the beach as late as possible and watching the sunset!

What are you working on right now? Two to Mango…the second book of the Tiki Goddess Mysteries.

What news would you like to share with your readers? I’m hoping they love the humor. There’s more funny stuff than mysteries. I’d love to hear from them on my new website at www.thetikigoddess.com  If they have any tiki photos I’d love to have those to post.

Thanks for having me back again. The last Holiday party was a blast!

So glad you have fun! Love having you around!

Giveaway: A copy of MAI TAI ONE ON Book 1 of the Tiki Goddess Mysteries. If I can figure out how to give away an e download for a Kindle that will be a possibility, too!

Blurb:

Six months ago if anyone would have told Em Johnson she’d end up divorced, broke, and running the dilapidated Tiki Goddess Bar on the magical North Shore of Kauai she would have told them to shove a swizzle stick up their okole.
As if all that isn’t bad enough, when an obnoxious neighbor with a grudge is found dead in the Goddess luau pit, suspicion falls on Em and the rest of the Goddess staff. With the help of a quirky dance troupe of over-the-hill Hula Maidens, Em and the cast of characters must band together to find the killer and solve the mystery before the next pupu party.

13. Jill Marie Landis: Historical/Inspirational Romance!

Welcome to Holiday Bash 2010! Contestant #13:

Jill Marie Landis

BIO:

Jill Marie Landis is the author of 25 bestselling novels. Her books have been on the USA Today and New York Times lists. The winner of two Romance Writers of America Rita Awards, Jill Marie lives in Hawaii with her husband. She enjoys sunning, writing on the beach, raising orchids and dancing hula.

Preliminary Questions:

Eggnog or Mimosas? Are you old enough to drink?

Eggnog. When that runs out, Mimosas.

Old enough to drink and old enough to know better but that never stopped me.

We’re also taking pictures with Santa, did you bring a gift for him? (Maybe a new release or a pretty book cover…)

2 autographed copies of HEART OF STONE.

Blurb:

Raised in a tribe of street urchins, Maddie Grande was taught to be a thief and beggar on the streets of New Orleans. She and her twin “brothers” have recently left New Orleans and moved to the bayou. The twins are rarely there, but Maddie has come to love the swamp and longs to change her life but she knows that her brothers will never give up their lawless ways. When the twins kidnap the daughter of a wealthy carpetbagger, they force Maddie to hide the precocious eight-year-old while they return to New Orleans to wait for notice of a reward.

Pinkerton agent Tom Abbott is assigned to the kidnapping case in which Maddie has become an accomplice. In a chase that takes them to Baton Rouge, a mutual attraction becomes evident, but Tom is a man of honor and Maddie is a thief and a liar.
Will Maddie and Tom listen to their hearts or choose honor over love?

OOOooooo, it looks awesome! Why don’t you come in and we’ll talk! First off…let’s play a game!

You’re standing in front of a Christmas tree, dressed as Santa’s helper. Your publisher asks what you are doing holding a copy of your book with a big smile. What do you tell him/her?

That I’m doing shameless self promotion as usual! I’ve danced the hula in a Borders Store to drum up business.

We don’t think you’re shameless! We’d love to see you hula!

Okay another: You’re in a Holiday writing contest. You have to plot a book in 30 minutes. You’re given a sleigh, a reindeer and a Santa hat. What do you come up with? How do you go about this?

Yikes! I grab a huge piece of art paper and start drawing circles and write the names of each character in a circle. Then I brainstorm and connect the dots:

The reindeer is dead. The sleigh appears to have run into something, half if it is crushed. Santa’s hat has a spot of blood on it. He is nowhere to be found.

Obviously, this is heading into the contemporary romantic suspense arena. The detective on the scene is lovely Sheila Reynolds. She’s a rookie, trying to act confident. She’s a knock out. Blonde and shapely. She has to overcome the handicap of being beautiful. No one ever takes her seriously. It’s the blonde thing, you know.

A crime scene vet is called (Is there such a thing?Must check sources.)He’s to do forensics on the reindeer. His name is Brick Dirk and he’s tall, dark and devastatingly handsome—but he’s got a thing against good looking blondes. Stems back from the time his stepmother locked him in a pantry for two days and he tried to eat all the canned food stored there and ended up sick.

But something draws him to Sheila. Something he tries to resist but it’s impossible.

Sheila’s boss, the chief of police arrives. The tension in the air is palpable.

And that’s how it goes. Stop me now.

Nooooo! More! LOL. So, are you a plotter or pantser? What is your routine?

I’m a plotter. I do character studies, usually end up with a 32 page synopsis but it’s just a road map to get me going. As I write I become a day to day pantser. I stop to research along the way. You can find a lot of plot in research details.

What advice would you give aspiring authors?

Get to the end then rewrite at least 4 times.. Even when you think you’re done, you’re not.

How did you start your career? Who was your first publisher?

On my second attempted novel I entered the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Contest for unpublished writers. I won the Historical Romance division that year and the book was bought by one of the judges who was an editor at Berkley Jove (Putnam now Penguin). The rest is history.

What are you working on right now?

HEART OF GLASS Book 3 of the Irish Angels series. It’s set in on a ruined plantation along River Road in New Orleans ten years after the War Between the States. A Beauty and the Beast theme. The heroine is an architect (self taught and in a man’s field for the times) who goes to restore the old home where she spent much of her childhood. The hero is the owner; he’s shut himself away in the garconniere and refuses her help. She feels it’s her duty to save him. She owes it to his family (his sister was heroine’s best friend.)  I think of the 3 books in the series, this is my favorite. Although whatever I’m working on at the time is my favorite, usually.

What news would you like to share with your readers?

Life news? I dance the hula and recently my hula sisters and I danced at elder care homes on the island where I live. My husband and I will be in California with my family for Christmas.

Book news? I love what I do (most days) and know how blessed I am to get to be a working writer. I have a new series I’m working on that is so much fun. Can’t wait to leak the news in 2011.

You’re wonderful! Where can readers find you?
